Personal Development, Health and Physical Education - PDHPE

PDHPE

Stage 4 and 5 Personal development, Health and Physical Education is offered in Years 7-10

The PDHPE Syllabus is organised into three content strands with a focus on three PDHPE skill domains. All students should be provided with opportunities to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills across a range of health and physical education concepts and contexts by studying content in an integrated manner and through practical application.

The three strands include:

• Health, Wellbeing and Relationships

• Movement Skill and Performance

• Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles

Physical Activity and Sports Science - PASS

Surf Camp

Physical Activity and Sports Science is offered as an elective in Years 9-10

This course aims to enhance students’ capacity to participate effectively in physical activity, sport, leading to improved quality of life for themselves and others. Students engage in a wide range of physical activities in order to develop key understandings about how and why we move and how to enhance quality and enjoyment of movement. PASS provides a solid foundation for the study of Personal Development, Health, and Physical Education or Sport, Fitness and Recreation (VET course) in Stage 6. It is also relevant to students who may be considering a career in the health or leisure industry.

100-hour Course: Students will study all outcomes and include a minimum of 15 hours’ study of a Board-developed module from each of the three Areas of Study.

200-hour Course: Students will study all outcomes and include a minimum of 20 hours’ study of a Board-developed module from each of the three Areas of Study.

The program includes practical and theory work from the following areas: 

·         Basic Anatomy and Physiology Exercise and its impact on the Body Gymnastics

·         Individual Games – Racquet games (mini-tennis, speedminton, badminton), Table Tennis, Archery

·         The Principles of Training

·         Team Games – Carpet Bowls, Soft Lacrosse, Flag Football, Speedaway, European Handball, Oz Tag

·         Soirts Injuries, Resuscitation and First Aid Motor

·         Learning Skill Acquisition

·         Sport and Recreation in the local community

·         Outdoor Education

·         Excellence in Performance

·         Snow and Alpine Safety

·         “Learn to Surf” camp

Child Studies

Child Studies Activities

Child Studies is offered as an elective in Years 9 - 10

This course will explore the broad range of social, environmental, genetic, and cultural factors that influence pre-natal development and a child’s sense of wellbeing and belonging between 0 and 8 years of age.

Throughout the course, students will develop skills that enhance their ability to:

• support a child’s development from pre-conception through to and including the early years

• positively influence the growth, development, and wellbeing of children

• consider the external factors that support the growth, development, and wellbeing of children • research, communicate and evaluate issues related to child development.

200-hour Course: Students will study a minimum of six modules and may include two school developed modules:

·         Preparing for parenthood

·         Conception to birth

·         Family interactions

·         Newborn care

·         Growth and development

·         Play and the developing child

·         Health and safety in childhood

·         Food and nutrition in childhood

·         Children and culture

·         Media and technology in childhood

·         Aboriginal cultures and childhood

·         The diverse needs of children

·         Childcare services and career opportunities

·         School-developed option

Health and Movement Science - HMS

Health and Movement Science is offered in Years 11-12

Year 11 is organised into 2 focus areas: Health for individuals and communities; and The body and mind in motion. Year 12 is organised into 2 focus areas: Health in an Australian and global context; and Training for improved performance. Depth studies are also to be embedded in Years 11 and 12, and a Collaborative Investigation embedded in Year 11. 

Community and Family Studies - CAFS

Community and Family Studies is offered in Years 11-12

Community and Family Studies is designed to develop in each student an understanding of the diverse nature and interdependence of families and communities, within Australian society. The course enables students to plan and manage resources effectively in order to address contemporary issues facing families and communities.

Exploring Early Childhood

Exploring Early Childhood is offered in Year 11-12

The Exploring Early Childhood course aims to achieve this by giving students an overview of development and related issues within an early childhood context. It provides the opportunity to consider a range of  issues in relation to the individual student, their family and the community. As well as reflecting on the personal relevance of childhood issues, students are encouraged to consider the implications for future interactions with children, be these as a parent, friend, carer or educator.

Sports Coaching (VET)

Team Sports

Sports Coaching is offered in Years 11-12

This course provides a pathway to work in community coaching roles working or volunteering at community-based sport clubs and organisations in the Australian sports industry.

In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge to coach participants up to an intermediate level in a specific sport and be competent in delivering a basic instruction session. Work may be undertaken as part of a team and would be performed under supervision or independently in a structured environment such as a sporting club or school.

Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation - SLR

Learning to surf

Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation is offered in Years 11-12

Students will learn about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle and recognise the need to be responsible and informed decision-makers.

This course enables students to further develop their understanding of and competence in a range of sport and recreational pursuits. They are encouraged to establish a lifelong commitment to being physically active and to achieving movement potential.
