Hi EHS Community,
Just wanted to write a quick message to you all regarding the current situation with Coronavirus (COVID-19). As a year 12 student, I know it’s an extremely testing and stressful time for the education system as a whole, with online learning being a significant change in the way we learn.
With our schooling situation changing so drastically over the past few weeks, I for one understand how different it has been in transitioning to online learning. Getting up and not putting on my uniform, communicating via emails, Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams, and working more independently to complete all my work. It all is very strange at first and does take some adjusting to, but I think many of us are starting to settle in and understand how this whole ‘online school’ thing works.
Firstly, a big thank you must go to our hardworking teachers for facilitating this quick change into online learning. The staff at EHS have quickly developed new resources and acquired new skills to assist in ensuring students still have access to education. I thank them for their hard work, and hope that they are all staying safe in these conditions.
It has been a big step out of the box for all of us, but I can say personally the learning curve has been a beneficial one. Many students are now improving their typing proficiency, learning how to use emails effectively and learning what it’s like to have to work independently to accomplish tasks without a teacher constantly reminding you to do your work. I believe all of these skills in particular are very beneficial for later in life and can be seen a positive learning experience in the current circumstances.
Of course, it’s difficult in times like these to stay focused and keep on track. I encourage you all to try and stick to your timetable, take breaks when we would normally have recess and lunch. Try and put down your mobile devices whilst doing schoolwork, just like you would in the classroom. Trust me, it does wonders for your productivity. Use your break time to talk and communicate with friends and family via FaceTime, Skype etc. In times like this, it is important to stay in contact with family and friends in order to socialise and remain in a healthy state of mind.
Also, where possible it is a good idea to get some exercise into your daily routine. If you can just go into your backyard with a sibling and kick a soccer ball, or do some push ups in between classes, it is important to keep up good levels of physical activity and exercise.
I know some students may be struggling with the change to online learning but know that we are providing feedback to teachers on the positives and negatives of how we are currently being taught. Together we can work together to deliver the best possible online learning in this difficult time.
Also, a friendly reminder to keep listening to guidelines from the Australian Government, practice self- isolation, regularly wash your hands and stay at home as much as you can. It may not seem like it, but these simple measures can save lives. Keep up to date on the everchanging situation and follow all policies that are put in place.
Finally, I hope you are all safe and healthy during these difficult times with the Coronavirus pandemic. It is a stressful and challenging time for teachers and students alike. Please follow the government guidelines regarding the pandemic, and I look forward to seeing you all again when school resumes as normal.
